My name is Lance Cash, I am a secondary English teacher here at the International School of Tanganyika and someone passionate about using science to improve how we run schools and education institutions. I will be presenting insights from neuroscience on how we can become more effective learners in any part of our lives.
My name is Imaan Lalji, I am 17 years old and am currently in IB1 at the International School of Tanganyika. I spend most of my days on the ocean or reading. I love debating and am a part of Model United Nations. For this year's TedX I will be speaking on the topic of the HPV Vaccine on both a global and local scale. This topic lacks attention and I hope to change that.
Hi! I am Rakshita Vaya from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I am a passionate educator and currently the CEO of Shree Hindu Mandal Schools – Nursery, Primary, and Secondary. I love travelling solo every once in a while and learning about different cultures. I enjoy reading and cooking in my free time, and hanging out with my two beautiful children. I have a great sense of humor and love the sound of laughter!
I am Dr. Priyank Punatar, a Consultant Physician in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. My main interest and expertise lies in both communicable and non-communicable diseases. I love reading, traveling, meeting new people and trying different cuisines. In my medical practice, I try to give a lot of importance to the mind along with the physical body as I feel they are not two separate entities but rather intertwined in more ways than one and known. Many a times, mental health is ignored and not given as much importance as required and thus, I feel we should be discussing it more. I will be discussing about A Dangerous Cocktail - Validations from Social Media.
My name is Laura Flosi and I am a mathematics teacher and football coach at the International School of Tanganyika in Dar es Salaam. I love teaching and coaching because I love being with people. As I spend time with different people, I always learn something new about the world and, in turn, something new about myself. My family (husband Josh and two teenage kids) moved to Tanzania during the height of the pandemic in 2020. Prior to Dar es Salaam, we have lived in Nairobi, Kenya and in Oregon in the USA. In my free time, I love to read, exercise, cook, eat good food, explore new places, and organize anything and everything.
My name is Annie Ljungqvist and I’m a trained therapist. I also co-founded Bloom Consultancy where we support both individuals and organisations with their wellness needs. In my 8 years of practice in the country, I spend my time tending to clients, raising awareness and conducting research within the African context. My core areas of skill are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and I administer Ink Blot (Rorschach) tests as well as other assessments. My goal is to raise the bar for Psychology and generate meaningful conversations around this taboo subject within our context.
Im Hadji, mind the 'd'. I'm a Tanzanian university student in Economics and Finance. I'm a debater and public speaker, amateur debate trainer and adjudicator with significant experience in competitions and currently gathering more. I'm a traditionalist yet slightly liberal. I'm addicted to political memes and a major advocate for people growing into competition culture.
TEDxYouth@Upanga is an independently organised TEDxYouth event that will take place for the fourth time in Upanga, Dar es Salaam on March 26, 2022.
The last few years have certainly brought to our attention that we could all pause to reflect about what we believe we know about ourselves, our lives, our society and the world at large. With the global pandemic and a range of other political, economic and environmental issues, we are invite to try and unlearn our old ways of living, thinking and being and redefine what is known
At the TEDx event, participants experience live TED talks, pre-recorded TED talks, and performances by students and local artists
TEDx, x = independently organised event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED upholds the ideal of sharing ideas that are worth spreading. That is why they created the program ‘TEDx’. TEDx is a program of local events organized independently of TED, but within TED rules and guidelines. Our event is called TEDxYouth@Upanga, with the ‘x’ signifying that is independently organized and the ‘Youth’ signifying the audience will be Tanzanian youth. At the coming events, we will hear from live speakers and online TED Talks that will provoke debate within the audience. Since the program’s inception in 2009, there have been over 10 000 events and 50 000 talks given across the world. We count ourselves lucky to have joined such an elite group.
You can view the recordings of TEDxYouth@Upanga live speeches from the past few years on YouTube; just search up "TEDxYouth@Upanga" and enjoy our students, teachers, Dar-community innovators and partners' inspiring words.
